Communication ModuleThe Communication Module (CM) is aone-to-one interface to the MPs. TheTrident v2 CM enables communicationwith:• External host computers• Distributed control systems (DCS)• Open networks • Network printers• Other Trident v2 systems• Tricon version 9–10 systemsA single Trident controller can supportup to two CMs on one CM Baseplate.Each CM operates independently andsupports three RS-232 or RS-485 serialports and two Ethernet ports per CM. Two CMs can provide redundantcommunication connections or additional independent communicationsports.
Communication CapabilitiesEach CM provides the followingcommunication capabilities:• Serial ports• Network ports• Multiple protocol supportSerial PortsEach CM provides three opticallyisolated RS-232 or RS-485 serialports which are user-configurable forModbus point-to-point or multi-point(network) connections. Transmissionrates up to 115 kilobits per second perport can be selected.Network PortsEach CM provides two network portswhich are configured as follows:One 10-megabit Ethernet port, withthe following connectors:• 10BaseT• Attachment unit interface (AUI)for a 10-megabit media adapterunit (MAU)One 100-megabit Ethernet port, withthe following connectors:• 100BaseTX• Media independent interface (MII)for a 100-megabit MAUMedia adapter units may be used inplace of the 10/100 BaseT RJ-45twisted-pair connections to convert theCM network ports to other Ethernetmedia types or to extend networkdistances.
