8-Point Supervised DigitalOutput ModulesDesigned for the most critical applications, Supervised Digital Output (SDO)modules meet the needs of systemswhose outputs remain in a single statefor extended periods of time (in someapplications, for years). An SDOmodule receives output signals fromthe Main Processors on each of threechannels. Each set of three signals isthen voted upon by a fully fault-tolerantquadruplicated output switch whoseelements are mechanical power relays,so that one voted output signal is passedto the field termination.Each SDO module has voltage andcurrent loopback circuitry coupled with sophisticated online diagnostics thatverify the operation of each outputswitch, the field circuit and the presence of a load. This design providescomplete fault coverage without theneed to influence the output signal.The modules are called “supervised”because fault coverage is extended toinclude potential field problems. Inother words, the field circuit is supervised by the SDO module so that thefollowing field faults can be detected:• Loss of power or blown fuse• Open or missing load• A field short resulting in the loadbeing energized in error • A shorted load in the de-energizedstateFailure to detect field voltage on anyoutput point energizes the power alarmindicator. Failure to detect the presenceof a load energizes the load alarm indicator. When an optional secondarypower supply is used, shorted loads inthe Off state can be detected. (Thisfeature is not provided on Model3611E, an AC module.)All SDO modules support hot-sparecapability, and they require separateexternal termination panels (ETP) witha cable interface to the Tricon backplane.
