Dual Digital Output ModuleDual Digital Output (DDO) modulesreceive output signals from the MainProcessors along a single parallel orseries path, and applies a 2-out-of-3voting process individually to eachswitch. The switches produce oneoutput signal which is then passed tothe field termination. While the quadruplicated output circuitry on TMRmodules provides multiple redundancyfor all critical signal paths, dualcircuitry provides just enough redundancy to ensure safe operation. DDOmodules are optimized for those safetycritical control programs where lowcost is more important than maximumavailability.DDO modules have a voltage-loopbackcircuit which verifies the operation of each output switch independently of thepresence of a load and determineswhether latent faults exist. Failure ofthe detected field voltage to match thecommanded state of the output pointactivates the LOAD/FUSE alarm indicator.In addition, ongoing diagnostics areperformed on each channel and circuitof a DDO module. Failure of any diagnostic on any channel activates theFault indicator, which in turn activatesthe chassis alarm signal. A dual moduleoperates properly in the presence ofmost single faults and may operateproperly with some kinds of multiplefaults, but stuck-Off faults are anexception. If one of the output switcheshas a stuck-Off fault, the output goes tothe Off state and a glitch may occur during switch-over to a hot-sparemodule.DDO modules support hot-spare capability, which allows online replacementof a faulty module. Each module ismechanically keyed to preventimproper installation in a configuredchassis.DDO modules require a separateexternal termination panel (ETP) with acable interface to the Tricon backplane.Digital outputs are designed to sourcethe current to field devices, so fieldpower must be wired to each outputpoint on the field termination.
